When Jim and I got engaged, his mother Beth was over the moon – a bit too much so. She immediately began bombarding us with her opinions and ideas for the wedding, barely giving us a chance to breathe. I tried to be patient, but it was clear she wasn’t going to let up anytime soon.

One day, Jim and I were out for a walk when I turned to him and asked, “Is your mom going to tone it down? I don’t want to have to tell her to back off.” Jim just chuckled and said, “Don’t worry, love. She’s a lot, but she’s not stupid. She’ll get the hint.” Famous last words. Fast forward to the day of our wedding.

I was getting ready to walk down the aisle when Beth appeared in a full-length white silk gown. I was taken aback, to say the least. “Beth, what are you wearing?” I asked, trying to keep my cool. She just winked and said, “You know, I wanted to make a statement.” The rest of the ceremony went off without a hitch, but I was seething inside.

How could she do this to me on my special day? Jim tried to calm me down, but I was having none of it. But then, things took a turn for the worse. During the reception, Beth got up and announced her engagement to her long-time partner. And just before our first dance, she came up to me with a sly grin and said, “You thought you’d be the center of attention today, didn’t you?” That was it. I’d had enough. I decided then and there that I would get my revenge.

And what better way to do it than at her own wedding? A year later, Beth was getting married to George, and I was determined to make it a day to remember. I convinced Jim to let me take charge of the wedding planning, and I made sure to include a few “surprises” of my own.

When Beth saw the sea of white-dressed guests at her wedding, her face turned beet red with rage. “Why is everyone wearing white?” she demanded. I just smiled sweetly and said, “Oh, didn’t you read your own wedding invitation? We thought it would be a lovely, unified look for your special day.” The rest of the ceremony was a blur, but I could tell Beth was seething.

And then, during the reception, Jim and I took the mic and announced our own surprise: we were having a baby! The crowd erupted in cheers and congratulations, and Beth’s face turned an even deeper shade of red. She stormed over to me, furious, and demanded to know if I had planned the whole thing.

I just smiled and said, “All I wanted was for everyone to look put together on your special day, Beth. You know how much you love everything to match perfectly.” She didn’t know what to say, and I could tell she was fuming. But then, something unexpected happened.

She called us the next morning and congratulated us on the baby, and even said she hoped we could move forward from there. I was taken aback, but I smiled and said, “Thank you, Beth. We hope so too.” And that was that. It wasn’t about getting revenge or one-upping her; it was about setting boundaries and showing her that we wouldn’t be pushed around. Now, as we wait for our baby to arrive, we’re hoping Beth will finally learn to respect our boundaries. But if not, we’re ready for whatever comes next. After all, as they say, “an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”
