Robby Benson, the iconic teen idol, celebrated his 67th birthday on January 21, 2023. With a career spanning numerous films and TV shows, including “Beauty and the Beast” and “Friends,” Benson’s life seemed picture-perfect. However, his journey was marked by harrowing health issues and a loving partnership with his wife, Karla DeVito.

The couple met during the Broadway production of “The Pirates of Penzance” and have been inseparable for 40 years, despite their rocky start. Benson credits DeVito for saving his life, supporting him through multiple open-heart surgeries and advocating for his health.

Benson’s health struggles began at 28 with a bovine valve replacement, followed by a botched second surgery that led to breathing difficulties and a “sadistic” nurse who ignored his pleas for help. Despite these challenges, he continued working and caring for his family, relying on DeVito’s unwavering support.

Their love story is a testament to the power of partnership and resilience. DeVito helped Benson find doctors and ensured he received the best treatment, ultimately saving his life. Benson acknowledges, “I’m alive because of her.”

With four open-heart surgeries behind him, Benson’s gratitude for DeVito’s unwavering support shines bright. “When we’re together, we can handle anything,” he says. Their 40-year journey serves as a reminder that love and support can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
