When it came to Reba’s take of the national anthem, many Super Bowl fans had different thoughts. Others believed it could have been greater. For Andra Day’s performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which is also known as the Black national song, many people online agreed.
In the Super Bowl pregame show, the Black national song was played for the fourth time. The song has been around since 1900 and shows how serious and hopeful Black Americans are about their wish for freedom.
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” became a sign of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s when it was picked up by the NAACP.

Lots of people talked about Andra Day’s show online before she sang at the Super Bowl. But after she sang, more people had their say.
One lawmaker, Republican Rep. Mike Loychik, said there shouldn’t be a “black national anthem.” They believe that since we are all American, we should all stand together during the national anthem. It made them mad that the NFL brought up racial problems.
A TV host named Megyn Kelly said on Twitter that the “so-called Black National Anthem” doesn’t belong at the game. It was her point that our national song already says this.
Some said that they learned the national anthem is for all Americans, not just black or white people. Others believe that making a different anthem for black people makes us more divided. People who agree with them think we should act like one country.
The crowd didn’t seem very excited to some people either.
Though I thought Andra Day did a great job. Why do you think that? Share your thoughts with us on Facebook.
