Many people don’t know this, though, but Eastwood was a passenger on a military plane from World War II that crashed in the Pacific when he was 21 years old.
In an interview, Eastwood said, “I was getting from Seattle to Almeda for free.”
We went down in rough seas off of Point Reyes, California, in the Pacific. Suddenly I was in the water and swimming a few miles to shore. I thought at the time, “Well, 21 isn’t long enough to live.”
Eastwood finally made it to land after swimming for hours through kelp beds in the Pacific. He climbed a bluff to send out a distress call.
This experience helped him a lot when he was making the 2016 biopic Sully: Miracle on the Hudson, which starred Tom Hanks.
The film, which got great reviews, is about the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River in 2009. All 155 passengers and staff members were saved.
In the movie, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger decided in a split second to land the jet in the cold Hudson River, even though his bosses later told him not to.
Eastwood told The Telegraph, “If I were in the same situation as the pilot, I probably would have taken a chance on a water landing rather than go somewhere with no runway.”
It goes without saying that Sully knew that area…He went to the right place…”He knew someone would see them,” he said.
Even though Sully did a great job landing and saved lives, Eastwood was more interested in what happened next.
“Someone of great character and interest to watch on film is someone who keeps their cool when things go wrong and can solve problems without getting upset,” Eastwood said.
“But the worst part for me was when the investigating board questioned his choices, even though he had saved so many lives.”
