People are very interested in her because she sings R&B, writes music, dances, directs music videos, choreographs shows, and designs clothes. “A Thousand and One,” on the other hand, has Taylor in a very different part. Taking place in Harlem as it changes, it’s set in the 1990s and early 2000s. I was born in Harlem and grew up there. This is A.V. Rockwell’s first full-length movie. As part of the U.S. theatrical competition at Sundance in January, it won the grand jury prize. Manohla Dargis, a film critic for The New York Times, wrote in a notebook after the festival that Taylor’s act without any extras was “terrific.”
