“A Thousand and One,” on the other hand, has Taylor in a very different part. She plays Inez, a woman who lost her parents when she was a child and finds it hard to start over after leaving Rikers Island. She takes her six-year-old son Terry out of the terrible New York City foster care system in order to be a better mother.
The movie shows Inez as she really is: a single Black mother who works hard to give Terry a good life while also dealing with the problems of the city. Taking place in Harlem as it changes, it’s set in the 1990s and early 2000s. I was born in Harlem and grew up there. This is A.V. Rockwell’s first full-length movie. As part of the U.S. theatrical competition at Sundance in January, it won the grand jury prize. Manohla Dargis, a film critic for The New York Times, wrote in a notebook after the festival that Taylor’s act without any extras was “terrific.”
