Barry Allen Sadler was a multifaceted American soldier, singer, songwriter, and author, most famously known for his patriotic song “Ballad of the Green Berets,” which topped the charts in 1966.
Sadler served as a medic with the Green Berets during the Vietnam War from late December 1964 to late May 1965. By the time he left the military, he had reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW.
In 1966, he performed “Ballad of the Green Berets” on The Ed Sullivan Show. This iconic performance has resurfaced on YouTube, garnering over two and a half million views.

The Green Berets are considered one of the most elite special operations units in the United States, named after their distinctive headgear. This unit was inspired by specialized groups such as the Alamo Scouts, Philippine guerrillas, First Special Service Force, and the Operational Groups of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).
Throughout his career, Sadler earned numerous awards, including the Purple Heart, the US Army Special Forces Insignia, and the Expert Marksmanship badge.
