In the harsh winter months, animals, like humans, are vulnerable to the dangers of cold weather. Hypothermia and frostbite are real risks, making it heartwarming to see people go the extra mile to keep them safe.
One farmer, Dean Gangwer from Rossville, Indiana, did just that when he discovered a newborn calf struggling to survive in the snow. With quick thinking and creativity, he turned his hot tub into a makeshift rescue bath, saving the calf’s life.
On a chilly morning in 2015, Dean found the calf, later named Leroy, on a snow-covered mound, breathing heavily. He knew he had to act fast. Using his knowledge of cattle, he determined that a hot bath was the best course of action. And, as luck would have it, his hot tub was the perfect size for the job.
Dean climbed into the hot tub fully clothed, cradling Leroy to keep him safe. After an hour-long soak, both farmer and calf emerged warm and cozy. Warm blankets were then wrapped around Leroy to keep him snug.
Thanks to Dean’s swift action, Leroy’s body temperature stabilized, and he was soon reunited with the herd. While Dean jokes that Leroy’s hot tub days are over, he’s grateful for the happy ending. This heartwarming story showcases the special bond between farmers and their animals, and the extraordinary measures they’ll take to keep them safe.
