Dick and Rick Hoyt, a remarkable father-son duo, defied the odds and inspired millions with their incredible journey. Despite Rick’s cerebral palsy, they completed over 1,000 races, including marathons and triathlons, together.
Born in 1962, Rick was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and doctors advised his parents to institutionalize him. However, Dick and his wife refused, determined to raise Rick as a normal child. With the help of a specialized computer, Rick attended public school and discovered his passion for sports.
At 15, Rick asked his father to help him participate in a 5-mile race to raise funds for a paralyzed lacrosse player. This marked the beginning of their incredible journey, with Dick training tirelessly to support his son. Together, they completed numerous endurance events, including 72 marathons and six Ironman Triathlons.
Their bond and determination inspired countless people, and in 2013, a bronze statue was unveiled in their honor near the Boston Marathon start line. The Hoyt Foundation, established in 1989, continues to support young people with disabilities, promoting inclusivity and empowerment.
Dick’s passing in 2021 left a void, but his legacy lives on through Rick and their remarkable story. Rick credits his father’s unwavering support and determination, saying, “My dad had the strength to achieve what we did.” Their unbreakable bond serves as a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and the human spirit.
