A heartbreaking tragedy has struck Mariah Carey as the iconic singer recently shared the devastating news of losing both her sister, Alison Carey, and her mother, Patricia Carey, on the same day.

The Grammy-winning artist disclosed this painful loss in a heartfelt statement, confirming that two of her closest family members passed away over the weekend.

“My heart is shattered by the loss of my mother this past weekend,” Carey expressed, according to PEOPLE.

“In an unimaginable twist of fate, my sister also passed away on the same day.”

The depth of such loss is difficult to comprehend, yet Carey conveyed her gratitude for the time she spent with her mother before her passing.

“I feel blessed to have had the chance to spend the last week with my mom before she left us,” the “All I Want For Christmas” singer shared.

“I am deeply appreciative of everyone’s love, support, and respect for my privacy during this unimaginable time.”

As of now, the causes of death for both Alison and Patricia remain unknown. Patricia, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was a pivotal figure in Mariah’s life. She and her former husband, Alfred Roy Carey, had three children together—Alison, Mariah, and Morgan—before their divorce when Mariah was just three years old.

According to PEOPLE, Mariah Carey’s relationship with her mother was complex.

In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer wrote: “My relationship with my mother, like many aspects of my life, has been filled with contradictions and a mix of emotions. It’s never been simple—it’s been a spectrum of feelings.”

Her relationship with Alison was also troubled, as noted in the same memoir. Carey revealed that maintaining distance from her siblings was “emotionally and physically safer” for her.

Our thoughts are with Mariah Carey during this incredibly challenging time. Losing a loved one is always hard, but losing two on the same day is beyond words.
