I never expected to meet someone on a plane who would change my life forever. But that’s exactly what happened when I met a young boy named Elliot, who was traveling alone with a note and $10.
As I settled into my seat, I noticed Elliot, who looked around 10 or 11 years old, sitting next to me. He seemed nervous and fidgety, and I assumed he was waiting for his parents to return from the restroom. But as the plane took off, I realized he was alone.
Elliot handed me a crumpled note and $10 without looking at me. The note explained that he was autistic and might ask repeatedly when the plane would land. His mother had written it, asking me to be patient and kind. I felt a lump in my throat as I read the note, and I knew I had to reach out to his mother.
I texted her, introducing myself and letting her know that Elliot was doing well. She replied immediately, thanking me and asking me to tell Elliot she was thinking of him. I showed Elliot the message, and he smiled slightly, looking more at ease.
As we flew, I tried to engage Elliot in conversation, asking him about airplanes and if he liked them. He nodded, still looking nervous, but I could sense him relaxing. I offered to buy him a snack, and he accepted, saying “thank you” in a low voice.
I took a selfie with Elliot, asking if I could send it to his mother. He nodded, and I sent it with a quick note. His mother replied, expressing her gratitude and relief.
When we landed, Elliot asked if I would help him find his mother. I agreed, and we navigated the busy terminal together. When we found his mother, Diane, she was overjoyed to see Elliot and thanked me profusely.
As we parted ways, I asked Diane if she’d like to grab coffee sometime. To my surprise, she agreed. As we got to know each other, I learned that Elliot’s father had abandoned him on the plane with just $10 and a note.
Two years later, Elliot is my stepson, and Diane is my wonderful wife. We still laugh about how a note and $10 led to our greatest adventure together. That chance encounter on a plane changed my life forever.
