Erin O’Malley, a woman from North Carolina, received shocking news that altered her life forever. Erin had given up on having children after going through the heartache of two miscarriages and losing her spouse. However, she found out she was expecting just hours before giving birth, and Lennox “Lenni” Mae, a healthy baby girl, was born.
Erin O’Malley was shocked by her unexpected pregnancy and her daughter’s birth: “I really didn’t know [how this happened],” she said. Because early menopause was typical in her family, Erin had thought that she was experiencing it and had written off her aching breasts as a sign of it. She also blamed her weight loss on a stomach hernia she had discovered after developing an allergy, as well as a coughing spasm brought on by her asthma that made her stomach expand and her belly button explode.
She made the decision to visit the hospital to find out what was going on as things began to seem a little stranger.
The path that Erin O’Malley took to becoming a mother included many unexpected detours. She had noticed that she could only eat tiny amounts at a time and that her stomach would enlarge after eating. She sought assistance from a local free medical clinic in September because she was worried. There, she was connected with a gynecologist, who recommended a CT scan and ultrasound to check for malignancy. However, she had not been tested for pregnancy and was unaware that she was carrying a child.
Amber, Erin’s sister, waited in the car for her sister while she went in for a follow-up appointment on October 12. They had no idea that Erin would be hurried to the labor and delivery room and would give birth to her daughter instead of going shopping. During her appointment, the hospital personnel unexpectedly learned that Erin was pregnant, and Erin was concerned they had detected malignant tumors.
Erin was in disbelief.
As she recalled the moment she discovered she was pregnant, Erin O’Malley’s shock and amazement were evident. Her doctor left the room for a moment during a regular visit to go over her imaging results. Erin had just started dozing asleep when he left.
“Ms. O’Malley, um — we found something on your scouting image,” she said. She dreaded the worst, so her heart plummeted when her doctor surprised her by saying, “There’s a baby in there.”
She found it to be amazing. She initially objected, claiming that it was impossible because she had long felt she couldn’t become pregnant. Erin was completely unaware of her situation.
