Many love tales are remarkable and offer escape and optimism, but few stick with us.

Raymond and Velva Breuer’s love tale captivated the nation.

Raymond and Velva spent most of their life together. They attended the same primary school and high school.

Raymond left Velva with a scar after accidentally tapping her with a hot poker to catch her attention.

“She married me to get even with me,” Raymond told The Herald at his 77th wedding anniversary party.
Despite this bad start, the Phelps County, Missouri-born pair married in 1940.

They had six children, 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family jokes about losing count.

Their family love captivated everyone who knew them.
Pastor Cheri Reisch told The Columbia Tribune that they always held hands in the church’s front row.

They never parted. True love.”

Both loved reading.
Raymond and Velva were lucky to be strong and healthy, even reading for fun.

Raymond followed Velva to Lenoir Woods Rehab Center to stay together.
Bobby Breuer, his son, told the Columbia Tribune that his father requested a nurse that if they died near together, they should be buried in the same casket.

I suppose. We approached the funeral director since others heard it.”

Raymond died on August 4, 2017, holding Velma.

Together always
Velma died 30 hours later. Velma was 96, Raymond 97.

Hand-in-hand, the couple was buried.

The family grieved for their parents, but they knew they were following their desires.

They spent almost 80 years together, so they should stay together after death.
