Karine de Souza, a 29-year-old Brazilian woman from Fortaleza who was diagnosed with Xeroderma Pigmentosum at the age of three, has endured online and in-person bullying because of her appearance. She nevertheless overcame the odds and smiled brightly while accepting her circumstances.
De Souza diligently applies SPF100 sunscreen to her entire body every two hours due to her skin issue. She spends her time inside, behind drawn curtains, for maximum security.
The difficult reality of receiving a Xeroderma Pigmentosum diagnosis confronts the Brazilian native.
Due to her defective DNA repair, her doctors warn that exposure to sunlight increases the chance of developing skin cancer.

Karine, who constantly fears developing melanoma, ignores her skin problem and lives life to the fullest despite the challenges she encounters.
She told Truly, “I get a lot of looks, a lot of people are staring at me, some of them move away.
De Souza described the terrible reality of constantly encountering contempt and harsh comments from strangers anytime she leaves her house, after undergoing more than 130 surgical procedures to remove sun-induced lesions.
Karine’s life is governed by stringent constraints, like only going outside at night, on rainy days, or for medical appointments because of her acute sensitivity to sunlight.
Even though Karine thought finding true love was impossible, her life took an unexpected turn three years ago when she met her soul mate online.
