No matter what they look like, every baby is unique. When their twin kids grow up healthy and happy, parents always feel lucky. But for Alison Spooner and Dean Durrant, going through the same kind of gift twice was a truly magical experience.
Dean, who is from West India and has dark brown skin, and Alison, who is from Britain and has red hair and green eyes, had twins with different skin tones.
When the couple first saw their baby girls in 2001, they thought they would be mixed-race.
The first pair, Lauren and Hayleigh, had light skin and green eyes, while the second pair had dark skin and brown eyes. Because of how different they looked, the pair was as rare as 1 in 500,000 pairs. But that wasn’t the end for this family.
After seven years, the family got another pair of dogs that were just like them.
People sometimes say mean things to them because of how different they look. “”Some people can be very rude,” Hayleigh said. They’ll say, “You’re lying; you’re not twins. Prove it!” So we’ll either give them the same address or pull out our” papers.”
“I like seeing how surprised people are. We had a hard time in college because there were many “groups of Asian, white, and black kids.
“The black group tried to include me, but I told them, ‘This is my white twin sister”!'” she said. “Nobody believed it. People look at us as if we’ve done something miraculous. I still can’t believe we’re twins.”
“”People just think we’re best friends instead of sisters, let alone twins”,” said her twin sister. That makes me happy, since “she is my best friend. We’re going out to a club together. When the bouncers find out we are” related, they are going to be surprised.”
The four girls are the only mixed twins in the world. This is written in the Guinness World Records.
“Even non-identical twins aren’t that common,” said Dr. Sarah Jarvis of Britain’s Royal College of General Practitioners, amazed by the odds. Twins who are not the same and whose parents are of different races are even less common. Even less common is for two eggs to be fertilized and produce babies of different colors. So, for it to happen twice, it must be very rare.”
Their mom, Alison, said that they were so unusual that their pictures were used at school. “”They’re more of a phenomenon among their friends” now,” she said. In biology class, “their school used to have a big picture of them. No one could believe or understand it”.”
Alison loves her daughters so much that she says, “The younger ones look up to the bigger ones and are always trying to be like “them. It’s like having two copies of yourself. They are the only ones who remember what it was like to be so similar but look so different when they were younger”.”
“Lauren and Hayleigh are my heroes,” one of the younger twins, Leah, said. “I always defend “my sister and help her up when she falls. People don’t believe she’s my twin, but I shout, “She’s my sister!” Since my older sisters did it, I do” it too.”
“Lauren and Hayleigh are the best,” said her twin sister. They teach me that having a twin sister is the best thing in the world, even if you are not the same.
